TheALF-161monoclonalantibodyreactswithprecursor,secretedandmembrane-associatedformsofmouseIL-1α(interleukin1alpha)alsoknownaslymphocyteactivatingfactor(LAF),andmononuclearcellfactor(MCF).IL-1αisa17kDapro-inflammatorycytokineproducedbyavarietyofcells,includingmacrophages,dendriticcells,TandBlymphocytes.IL-1αexertsawiderangeofimmuneandinflammatoryresponsesonamanycelltypesincludinglymphocytes,epithelialcellsandfibroblasts.IL-1ismadeupofIL-1αandIL-1βwhicharetheproductsofdistinctgenes,butwhicharerecognizedbytwodistinctIL-1receptors.TheIL-1receptortypeI,a80kDatransmembraneproteinwithdemonstratedIL-1signalingfunctionandtheIL-1receptortypeII,a68kDamembraneproteinwitharelativelyshortcytoplasmictail.ThetypeIIreceptoractsasadecoytargetforIL-1,inhibitingIL-1activitiesbypreventingthebindingofIL-1tothetypeIreceptor.TheALF-161antibodyhasbeenshowntoneutralizethebioactivityofnaturalorrecombinantIL-1α.
