HO2,orhemeoxygenase2,belongstothehemeoxygenasefamilythatareessentialenzymeinhemecatabolismthatcleavehemetoformbiliverdinwhichissubsequentlyconvertedtobilirubinbybiliverdinreductase(1).HO2ispartofthecalcium-sensitivepotassiumchannelcomplexandenhanceschannelactivityinnormoxia(2).KnockdownofHO2expressionreduceschannelactivity,aneffectthatisreversedbycarbonmonoxide.Inhibitionofcalcium-sensitivepotassiumchannelsbyhypoxiaisdependentonHO2expressionandisaugmentedbyHO2stimulation.

OlivisaysclinicalstudiesusingBMP4couldbeginwithinayearand,ifsuccessful,drugtherapiescouldbeavailabletothepublicwithinthreetofouryears.
