PTPRF,likeothermembersoftheproteintyrosinephosphatase(PTP)family,isasignalingmoleculethatregulatesavarietyofcellularprocesses.PTPRFpossessesanextracellularregion,asingletransmembraneregion,andtwotandemintracytoplasmiccatalyticdomains,andrepresentsareceptor-typePTP.TheextracellularregioncontainsthreeIg-likedomainsandninenon-Iglikedomainssimilartothatofneural-celladhesionmolecule.PTPRFfunctionsintheregulationofepithelialcell-cellcontactsatadherentsjunctionsaswellasinthecontrolofbeta-cateninsignaling.AnincreasedexpressionlevelofPTPRFhasbeenfoundintheinsulin-responsivetissueofobese,insulin-resistantindividualsandmaycontributetothepathogenesisofinsulinresistance.Twoalternativelysplicedtranscriptvariantsofthisgene,whichencodedistinctproteins,havebeenreported.
