IL-22isaninflammatorycytokinerelatedtoIL-10thatisproducedbyTcellsandthatinducesaresponseincellsthroughaheterodimericcellsurfacereceptorcomposedofIL-22R1andIL-10R2C.OneoftheactionsofIL-22appearstobetheinductionoftheacutephaseinflammatoryresponseinhetapocytes,actingthroughactivationofSTATsandtranscriptionalregulation.AgenewithhomologytotheextracellulardomainofthecellsurfaceIL-22R1receptorcomponentwasidentifiedthatlackedtransmembraneandcytoplasmicdomains.TheproteinderivedfromthisgenewasfoundtobindIL-22andblockitsinteractionwiththecellsurfacereceptor.TheIL-22solublereceptor(IL-22BP,IL-22bindingprotein)alsoblockssomeofthedownstreameffectsofIL-22suchasSTATactivationandthetranscriptionalinductionofgenesinvolvedintheimmuneandinflammatoryresponses.TheIL-22solublereceptormayactasananti-inflammatoryagent.
