Abstract
Mesenchymalstemcellshavebeendemonstratedtoameliorateexperimentalautoimmuneencephalomyelitis(EAE),a
modelofmultiplesclerosis,promptingclinicaltrialsinmultiplesclerosiswhicharecurrentlyongoing.Animportant
questioniswhetherthistherapeuticeffectgeneralisestootherautoimmuneneurologicaldiseases.Weperformedtwotrials
ofefficacyofMSCsinexperimentalautoimmuneneuritis(EAN)inLewis(LEW/HanMHsd)rats,amodelofhuman
autoimmuneinflammatoryneuropathies.Nodifferencesbetweenthegroupswerefoundinclinical,histologicalor
electrophysiologicalemeasures.Thiswasdespitetheabilityofmesenchymalstemcellstoinhibitproliferationof
CD4+T-cellsinvitro.ThereforetheefficacyofMSCsobservedinSdemyelinationmodelsdonotnecessarily
generalisetothetreatmentofotherformsofneurologicalautoimmunity.
